Paolo Farah

Paolo Farah is a preeminent figure in international economic law, environmental sustainability, and global trade regulation. Throughout his illustrious career, he has promoted international cooperation to address pressing global issues such as environmental conservation and trade regulation ethics. Farah's foundation in legal education is formidable; he holds a J.D. in International and European Law from Paris Ouest La Defense Nanterre University in France. He also earned an LLM in European Legal Studies from the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium, in 2003. He completed a dual PhD in International Law from Aix-Marseille University in France and the University of Milan in Italy in 2011.

Starting his career at the Legal Affairs Division of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, Farah delved deeply into the complexities of global trade laws and policies. His experience at the WTO equipped him with unique insights into the workings of international trade, which he later brought to his role as an associate lawyer at Baker & McKenzie in Milan. There, he specialized in handling complex international business law issues advising multinational corporations on regulatory compliance and cross-border transactions.

Paolo is a distinguished professor at West Virginia University, where he is part of the John D. Rockefeller IV School of Policy and Politics faculty within the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. His teaching repertoire includes public administration, environmental policy, law, and energy justice courses, reflecting his diverse expertise and passion for teaching.

As director of the Energy Justice and Just Transition Lab, Farah’focuses on researching sustainable energy policies that consider environmental impact and social equity. He also leads the Eberly College Interdisciplinary Research Collaborative, where he facilitates research that addresses global challenges such as environmental degradation, human rights, and policy development.

Beyond his commitments in the United States, Paolo is also an Internationally Renowned Professor of Law at Beijing Foreign Studies University in China. In this role, he not only teaches but also directs the Summer Law Institute in China, an educational program he has led since 2006. This program provides advanced legal training to professionals worldwide.

Farah’s consultancy roles are extensive and influential. They involve strategic projects with the United Nations Development Program, the Italian Ministry of Economic Development and Commerce, and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. His expert advice helps shape policies crucial for promoting sustainable economic development globally.

Paolo is a prolific scholar who has authored over 60 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and several influential books. He is also the editor-in-chief of multiple academic series with reputable publishers like Routledge, Palgrave Macmillan, and Wolters Kluwer, which focus on critical topics such as transnational law, sustainable development, and globalization.

Farah has also held several key positions in professional organizations, including as a board member of the European Society of International Law and chair of its Interest Group on International Environmental Law. Additionally, he has significant roles within the American Society of International Law and the International Law Association, influencing key developments in international legal practices and policies.

As the founder and president of gLAWcal — Global Law Initiatives for Sustainable Development, Paolo spearheads research and discussions on sustainable development and global justice, aiming to influence international legal frameworks to support global sustainable development goals.

Fluent in Italian, English, French, and Chinese, his language skills significantly enhance his ability to communicate and collaborate internationally, enriching his teaching, consultancy, and research initiatives.
